Laser Printers More Toxic Than Cigarette Smoke

Emissions from office laser printers can be as unhealthy as cigarette smoke, according to an Australian professor who is now calling for regulations to limit printer emissions.
Office workers breathing easy since smoking was banned in public places in the U.S. and U.K. can start worrying again, according to research from the Queensland University of Technology's Air Quality and Health Program, led by physics professor Lidia Morawska.

The average printer releases toner particles that can get deep into the lungs and cause respiratory problems and cardiovascular trouble, according to Morawska's team, part of the International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health, and specialists in atmospheric particles.
The team tested 62 laser printer models--all relatively new--and found that 17 of them were "high emitters" of toner particles. Despite using similar technology, office photocopiers do not emit particles, the team found.

The particles have not had a full chemical analysis, but some are potential carcinogens, according to a report in The Sydney Morning Herald. Several of the high emitters were Hewlett-Packard LaserJet models, such as the 1320 and 4250, although eight HP LaserJet 4050 series printers were shown to have no emissions, according to reports.

The printer-emissions data were discovered by chance when an investigation of office ventilation systems, carried out jointly between the university and the Queensland Department of Public Works, found five times as many particles indoors as those produced by traffic outdoors. Using an electronic sniffer, researchers traced the emissions to printers. The emissions were found to increase during the day, when printers were left on standby or in full operation.

Toshiba's New 1.8-inch HDD Achieves 100GB - The World's Largest

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation, the industry leader in bringing high storage capacities to small form factor hard disk drives, today announced a 1.8-inch drive that offers a storage capacity of 100 gigabytes, the largest*1 capacity yet achieved in this class of HDD. The new drive, MK1011GAH, employs perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology and an improved error correction code to secure the highest*2 areal density of any 1.8-inch HDD in the market, 240.8 megabits per square millimeter (155.3 gigabits per square inch). Toshiba will start mass production of this new best-in-class drive from January 2007.

Packing larger data capacities into small form factor HDD is a must to support continued advances in the notebook PC market and to meet growing demand for personal digital media supporting high capacity audio and video applications. Toshiba's new 1.8-inch drive builds on the Company's leadership in this key product segment as the first HDD in its class to achieve a 100GB capacity. This latest Toshiba advance meets needs for enhanced, lightweight storage capacities and will support the development of future generations of smaller, lighter, more powerful mobile PC. In the personal digital media market, the new drive's unrivaled capacity will support storage of multiple data sources, including home video and movies, and will bring users improved functionality.

Alongside capacity improvement, Toshiba has also improved power consumption*3 to 0.003W/GB, as defined in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Energy Conservation Law, assuring a more environmentally friendly design. The new drive also complies with the EU's RoHS directive, which came into force in July 2006.

Toshiba takes HD DVD to the Next Level With 51GB HD DVD-ROM Disc

Las Vegas, Nevada, January 7, 2007 and Tokyo, Japan, January 8, 2007 -- Toshiba Corporation today underlined the versatility and high capacity of the HD DVD format with the announcement that the company has developed a triple-layer HD DVD-ROM (read only) disc with a capacity of 51 gigabytes. The new disc can store up to 7 hours1 of high-definition video and adds an extended capacity, high-end option to the already extensive line-up of HD DVD-ROM discs. Toshiba aims to secure approval of the new disc by the DVD Forum within this year.
The new ROM disc has a three-layer structure, with each layer storing 17GB of data. The advances capacity over current ROM discs, which hold 15GB of data in each layer of a single-sided disc. Continued improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, supporting a further boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc. Toshiba has confirmed the disc structure and its successful operation.
The new disc shares the same disc structure as standard DVD and previously announced HD DVD formats: two 0.6-mm thick discs bonded back-to-back. This time-tested physical structure offers proven volume manufacturing at little cost increment.

Toshiba Launches Signature Windows Vista PC

LAS VEGAS (CES Booth #12832) — Jan. 7, 2007 — Toshiba’s Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced the Portégé® R400 notebook computer. Highlighted by two world’s first technologies, the Portégé R400 is the product of a joint collaboration between industry giants, Toshiba and Microsoft, to create the signature Windows Vista™ PC.

“The goal of this collaboration was to produce a mobile computing solution, which would showcase the expertise of both Toshiba and Microsoft and create the signature Windows Vista PC,” said Mark Simons, vice president and general manager, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division. “We are confident the Portégé R400, with its breakthrough technology, will appeal to the highly successful mobile computing user.”
“Together with Toshiba, we wanted to advance the state-of-the-art in mobile computing by designing a notebook computer that takes full advantage of the new mobile PC technologies in Windows Vista,” said Mike Sievert, corporate vice president, Windows at Microsoft. “Our customers will benefit from advances in mobile software capabilities and the fresh approach to style and ergonomics offered by the Portégé R400.”

Toshiba’s Portégé R400 is the world’s first notebook computer with the ability to automatically synchronize e-mail and calendar events through the integration of Microsoft’s Active Notifications. This exclusive technology helps ensure accurate and timely information is available to the user — whether the system is on or in suspend mode. To assist with this synchronization process, the Portégé R400 features Toshiba’s ConfigFree®, which helps detect and connect to the strongest and most reliable network connection available.

To further enhance the functionality of the system’s automatic e-mail synchronization capabilities, the company added the Toshiba Edge Display to the Portégé R400. Located on the front edge of the Portégé R400, this secondary display serves as the user’s Personal Information Assistant allowing the user to easily monitor his/her inbox and calendar activity. To ensure full benefits of the convertible design, the Toshiba Edge Display is viewable in notebook or tablet mode and even when the unit is stored in a carrying case.

With the Portégé R400, Toshiba is announcing the world’s first wirelessly dockable notebook computer. This seamless approach eliminates the daily hassle of connecting and disconnecting peripherals and delivers the convenience and simplicity that mobile users demand. Through the integration of Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology with wireless digital video capabilities, the Portégé R400 docking experience is designed specifically for desktop use and can automatically connect when the notebook comes within proximity of the Toshiba Wireless Port Replicator. The Toshiba Wireless Port Replicator will be compatible with new Portégé R400 models — both products are targeted for availability in the second quarter of 20071.

As a convertible notebook computer, the Portégé R400 combines a patent pending elevated rotational hinge2 and a 12.1-inch diagonal widescreen LED backlit high-brightness display with wide viewing angle. This screen technology combined with Microsoft Windows Aero™ delivers a rich and brilliant visual computing experience.

A bold design statement, Toshiba employed a dramatic white and black color scheme to the Portégé R400. This distinctive approach delivers a level of elegance and sophistication to satisfy the needs of successful mobile professionals, discriminating technology enthusiasts, C-level executives and small business entrepreneurs. The high-gloss finish of the Portégé R400 features an ultraviolet, clear coat for greater scratch-resistant than standard paint.
The integration of a biometric fingerprint reader, multi-level passwords and a TPM 1.2 encryption module as part of the company’s exclusive EasyGuard™ technology3 helps safeguard the Portégé R400 against unauthorized access, data theft, and virtual attacks. This sophisticated, yet simple, strategy helps preserve confidential company data and sensitive personal information to deliver a high level of tranquility to Portégé R400 users.
The Portégé R400 comes with a three-year standard limited warranty4, which includes carry-in support at Authorized Service Providers throughout the country, or the customer may use any of the more than 3,000 UPS Stores for packaging and delivery of the product to a centralized depot for prompt service turnaround. Customers can also choose to upgrade the notebook’s service plans, including up to four years of extended service plans.

Toshiba's Portégé R400 with Genuine Windows® Vista™ Business has a starting price point of $2,595. Configurations will also be available with Genuine Windows® Vista™ Ultimate. The Portégé R400 will be available on Jan. 30, 2007 through Toshiba’s reseller, mail order partners and direct from http://www.toshibadirect.com/.

Irvine, California (December 18, 2006)

Toshiba America Business Solutions, Inc. (TABS), is proud to announce that it achieved the highest overall rating in the Office Products Analyst’s (OPA) Annual Color End-User Survey. Among the 20-plus competing brands, Toshiba ranked “Best Overall” with a cumulative rating of 9.3 out of 10. TABS also received the highest average ratings in both effectiveness and performance, as well as the four core survey categories including: Reliability, Image Quality, Operability & Functionality and Maintenance & Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

“We congratulate Toshiba on this impressive achievement,” said Andy Slawetsky, president, Industry Analysts, Inc. “Based on the results of this study, anyone in the market for a color device should consider Toshiba products.”

The OPA Annual Color End-User Survey represents opinions from 128 verified end-user responses encompassing 253 installed devices including multifunction products (MFPs), copiers and printers. Participants rated devices in a variety of categories on a scale of 1 - 10 (one being lowest, 10 highest). TABS users consistently rated its full-color products higher than users of any other brand in the OPA survey, with a 15 percent gap between TABS and the lowest ranked brand, and a 3.3 percent gap over the second-highest-rated brand.

Further underscoring its technological leadership, Toshiba America Business Solutions Inc. (TABS) is proud to announce that it again has received top honors in Business Equipment Research and Test Laboratories’ (BERTL®) prestigious Readers’ Choice Awards program. TABS was recognized with six awards, including:

Color Reliability – Reseller Platinum Award

Onsite Service & Support – End User Gold Award
Running Costs – End User Gold Award
Speed & Efficiency of Installation – End User Gold Award

These awards validate that we’re meeting the needs and demands of our customers.”
